4. Lobuche & Island Peak (Twin Peak Expedition)

Lobuche & Island Peak

(Twin Peak Expedition)

Lobuche Peak and Island Peak are two trekking peaks in Khumbhu Region.  Lobuche (also spelt Lobuje) is a Nepalese mountain which lies close to the Khumbu Glacier and the Lobuche village. There are two main peaks, Lobuche East (6,145 meters) and Lobuche West (6,119 metersm. This trekking peak is a beautiful mountain ideal for those people who want to learn Alpine Mountaineering and have done some high altitude climbing to Mount Kilimanjaro or Mount Elbrus and now looking for their next expedition to tackle their first Himalayan Peak.

Island Peak, located in the same Khumbhu Region, is another popular Above 6,000m trekking peaks in Nepal. For the climb you have the advantage of using a high camp placed at 5,600m, which makes it a shorter summit day compared to climbing all the way from base camp at 5,000m. The ascent begins with a scramble up a rocky gully to a ridge where you put on crampons and rope up for the glacier crossing heading towards the south ridge. The route across the glacier is easy-angled, but it can be crevassed in places. From the bergshrund at the base of the headwall, 100m of snow and ice, as steep as 45° is climbed to arrive on the airy summit ridge. This is followed to the top, where you can enjoy fabulous views of Lhotse Shar, Makalu’s west face, the north face of Baruntse and Ama Dablam’s north ridge.

This 24-days expedition itinerary ensures you acclimatise gradually whilst trekking up the Khumbu Valley, before start climbing Lobuche Peak followed by Island Peak. From the peak you get amazing views of Everest alongside Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam and Pumori.
