Khüiten Peak  is the highest point in Mongolia, on the west side of the country along the border with China. It is 4,374 m (14,350 feet, previously 4,356 m) high and has a permanent snow cap. Its part of a mountain chain called Tavan Bogd, meaning ‘five saints’ with each of the peak names representing simple meanings; Nairamdal – friendship; Malchin – herder; Burgd – eagle; Olgii – cradle and Khuiten – cold.   Khuiten Peak is one of five peaks of Tavan Bogd mountain.

The peaks and associated glaciers are part of a National Park that borders Mongolia, China and Russia. A wild, remote, beautiful wilderness made up of spectacular flowering fields and vast open mountain tundra, inhabited only by traditional herding families and abundant wildlife. This expedition is more a cultural and mountaineering experience in the remote areas of Mongolia.  You will have the opportunity to meet the traditional people who lead a seasonal lifestyle, adapted to the harsh environment.

Expedition Itinerary

Then choose to visit one of the following museums: Museum of National History introducing Mongolia’s history from early humans to modern era and the Winter palace of Bogd Khan showcasing rare Buddhist artwork and items of personal use of this last theocratic ruler of Mongolia. A picnic lunch will be served en-route. We first drive across mountains desert and then along V-shaped mountain valleys before arriving to the NP gate. Here we set up our tented camp. When camping (and essentially on glacier) 3 person dome tents are provided on twin shares basis. A mess tent is provided during camping as well as a field shower. Plus we carry a toilet tent with a seat placed over a cat hole. On this particular trip however, you get to use it only once because designated (although very basic) toilet exist at both the NP gate and BC and digging is forbidden. Cooking is done on large propane stoves. On glacier we use portable mountain stoves. This evening local camel drivers arrive with their beasts of burden.

Once at the top you can enjoy spectacular bird’s eye views of glaciers beneath and of the Russian territory as the ridge overlaps with the border line. Only trekking poles are required for the Malchin climb. Alternatively you can take a less demanding option of hiking up to lower ridge and glance into Russia too. Reaching the camp normally takes about 6 hours in good weather. The porters deliver camp equipment and food to ABC and return to BC. If necessary they can as well shuttle more supplies during the climbing days ahead. On our standard tours clients usually carry all their personals in a large backpack. If necessary however you can pre-book an extra porter at additional fee. All cooking in ABC is done by the guide and the cook remains at BC.
